See you for the Serie A 2003-2004 season! Have a good summer.

Pitch invasion, last home game of 2003-2003 season Forza Lazio!

29 May 2003
Udinese 2 - Lazio 1

Lazio's final match of the 2002-2003 season was, disappointingly, an away defeat. Frustratingly, Milan's result meant that had Lazio won, they would have ended the season in an impressive third place. As it is, the team's fourth place is a highly honourable placing for a season wracked by financial uncertainties and deprived of the biggest names.

Lazio end the season with 60 points, 12 below winners Juventus and 11 above city rivals Roma. Like Juventus, Lazio only lost four games this season, but with 15 wins to the leaders' 21.

Now the action is over, attention once again turns to the boardroom and the transfer market. Mancini is Lazio's biggest question mark. After performing unexpected miracles, the manager is in great demand, and voices have been linking him to Inter Milan for months. While some of the players are likely to leave, Mancini would be the most deeply-felt loss. Meetings this week are supposed to 'clarify' the situation. As with last year's toing and froing, it's unlikely that anything can be certain until those concerned pack up and leave Rome, or until they take their place on next season't bench.

17 May 2003
Lazio 3 - Brescia 1 : Lazio in the Champions League

In front of a sold-out Stadio Olimpico, Lazio played their last home match of the season this afternoon. To make up for for earlier home disappointments, the team came back from a 0 - 1 scoreline (Roberto Baggio's old magic) to score a celebratory 3 - 1 victory. Thanks to Roma, who held challengers Chievo to a 0 - 0 draw, Lazio have now secured fourth position and a place in next year's Champions League.

After a frustrating opening, and conceding a goal, Lazio equalised with a penalty by Sinisa Mihailovic in front of the Curva Nord. Exorcising past penalty nightmares, the defender blasted the ball home and Lazio had equalised. Shortly afterwards, Cesar gave the home team the lead, and during the second half Claudio Lopez scored Lazio's third goal. At the end of the game, fans invaded the pitch and mobbed players and managers, who were feted by the whole crowd.

11 May 2003
Bologna 0 - Lazio 2

Lazio defeated Bologna on Saturday (penalty by Inzaghi, second goal by Favalli) to consolidate their hold on fourth place. Attention was inevitably elsewhere; Juventus and Inter both drew, meaning that Juventus are yet again the winners of the Scudetto. But with two matches still to be played, Lazio are still able to dream of third or even second place.

5 May 2003
Lazio 0 - Juventus 0

Last Saturday's match started well for Lazio; the fans celebrated the club's financial survival plans and the team began well. But the familiar saga of missed chances culminated in a second-half missed penalty. Stefano Fiore followed in the footsteps of Mihailovic and Lopez to miss Lazio's fourth crucial missed penalty of the season. Consequently Juventus look set to win their 27th Serie A trophy.

1 May 2003
Inter 1 - Lazio 1

Lazio achieved an honourable away draw against Inter at the weekend; a result that was more than deserved by Mancini's hardworking side. On Saturday night Lazio face leaders Juventus. Although the Turin side is 8 points clear at the top of the table, pundits are recalling Lazio's decisive match against Inter last May, and suggesting that once again it could be Lazio who take a large part of the responsibility for deciding the destination of the scudetto. Meanwhile, only two points now separate Lazio from third place so the club have much to fight for.

25 April 2003
Lazio 2 - Piacenza 1
Lazio 0 - Porto 0 (UEFA Cup)

The early-season hopes of Lazio fans took several blows this week, as Lazio followed their Coppa Italia exit with a nailbiting home game against Piacenza and a draw against Porto that meant goodbye to the UEFA Cup. Against Piacenza, the home side stirred themselves to recover from a Piacenza goal. Reacting well, the squad managed a 2-1 victory, maintaining the 4-point clearance above Parma for the coveted fourth spot. After Milan's shock defeat left them just three points above Lazio, hopes even exist for a higher placing.

In the second leg of the UEFA Cup semi-final last night, Lazio had to win 3-0. The club had appealed to fans for their support, and with tickets just one euro for women and children, the stadium was a sell-out. But all the singing and flag-waving was to no avail. The usual story of missed chances in front of goal, and a determined opposition left the scoresheet goalless. Mancini selected three forwards - Chiesa, Lopez and Simone Inzaghi, but nothing worked for the home side. The sending off just before half-time of Cesar and Porto's Postiga reduced both sides to ten men - and in the second half this seemed to favour the visitors, as Lazio's early dominance began to look shakier. When Inzaghi went down in the area, and the disappointing Claudio Lopez saw his penalty saved by Porto goalie Vitor Baia, the writing was already on the wall for Lazio. The fans applauded their suport but nothing could mask the bitter taste of disappointment.

17 April 2003
Roma 1 - Lazio 0 (Coppa Italia semi-final, second leg)

The clouds continue to gather overhead for Lazio, who last night lost the fourth and final derby of the season. The team played fairly strongly, but allowed themselves too many small errors. The absence of Stam and above all Peruzzi was a decisive factor. After several near misses, including a header which came off the post, Lazio still looked as though they could overturn the defeat of the first leg. But Roma began the second half with more conviction. Montella came on for Cassano and continued his role of thorn in Lazio's side by taking advantage of an error by Marchegiani. The goalkeeper failed to hold onto the ball, and Montella saw and took his opportunity. His rapturously-received goal remained the only one of the match, until a Lazio strike in the closing minute was disallowed for offside. Then Collina blew his whistle and Lazio were out of the Coppa Italia.

14 April 2003
Lazio 3 - Como 0
Porto 4 - Lazio 1 (UEFA Cup semi-final, first leg)
Modena 0 - Lazio 0

Lazio have produced more mixed results in recent weeks. Another welcome home victory put visitors Como in their place, but last week's trouncing in Portugal has put the UEFA Cup Final almost out of reach. Tickets for the return leg in Rome next week have been reduced accordingly - just one euro for women and children. Yesterday's away draw at Modena saw a tired Lazio extending their lead over nearest fourth-place challengers Parma (who lost to Roma).

23 March 2003
Besiktas 1 - Lazio 2 (UEFA Cup)
Parma 2 - Lazio 1

A splendid UEFA Cup away victory for Lazio (with early goals by Fiore and Castroman) means that Lazio will face Porto in the semi-final of the UEFA Cup on the 10th and 24th of April.

But defeat today in Parma has brought an impressive away record to an end and made Lazio's position in Serie A look still more threatened.

16 March 2003
Lazio 1 - Besiktas 0 (UEFA Cup)

Lazio relieved their fans with Thursday's rare home victory. The first round of the UEFA Cup quarter-final against Besiktas ended in a 1 - 0 victory for the Rome side and a burst of renewed confidence. Simone Inzaghi has been notable mostly by his absence this year; but the striker marked his return as a substitute with a prompt winning goal for Lazio. The return leg takes place on March 20th.

9 March 2003
Roma 1 - Lazio 1

Lazio held the lead for almost the entirety of yesterday's Rome derby, outplaying their city rivals and - particularly in the first half - demonstrating the quality that has shone in their away fixtures. A period of outstanding play resulted in a neat goal by Stankovic in the 8th minute. Mancini chose Chiesa and Corradi in attack, with Fiore, Giannichedda and Stankovic providing strength and creativity in support. Mihajlovic, whose fitness had been in doubt, played an excellent game in defence, and Stam was rock-like as ever.

Despite almost constant pressure, Lazio failed to increase their lead. In the second half Roma stirred themselves and the final 45 minutes were hotly contested. Lazio had a Corradi goal disallowed for offside - which prompted Mancini, after the match, to join finally the ranks of managers complaining about refereeing standards. Stankovic and Delvecchio had a contretemps which led to both players being sent off. And finally, with minutes to go, unpopular young Roma striker Cassano - who was originally not supposed to play, but had his suspension cancelled on flimsy grounds - slotted the ball into the net to send the home crowds wild and to leave Lazio with a draw that felt like a defeat.

5 March 2003
Perugia 2 - Lazio 2; Wisla Krakow 1 - Lazio 2 (UEFA Cup)

At the weekend Lazio managed a respectable draw away at Perugia, although extra points would have been useful for Mancini's side, who are slipping further behind first place in Serie A.

Tonight, against the odds, Lazio beat Polish side Wisla to qualify for the next round of the UEFA Cup (where they will face Besiktas). After last week's postponement of the game, and this week's continuing controversy over the state of the Krakow pitch, the game could have turned nasty, but instead both teams played determined football on a difficult surface. The referee was the most notable casualty of the playing surface, limping off to be substituted by the fourth official early on in the first half.

The home side took the lead after three minutes, with an opportunistic counter-attack. Lazio's prospects looked bleak; after a 3-3 draw in Rome, they need to win this leg. As the team have repeatedly shown in this season's away fixtures, Mancini's players responded well to the challenge. A Fernando Couto header from a Lazio corner levelled the score, and sent the defender somersaulting with joy. During the second half, the Poles put everything they had into the game, but Lazio fought back, and a superb shot by Enrico Chiesa gave them the lead they needed.

Now Lazio are free to concentrate on Saturday evenings big game, 'away' to Roma in the Stadio Olimpico for this season's second Serie A Rome derby.

27 February 2003
UEFA Cup match postponed

It was announced this afternoon that tonight's UEFA Cup second leg against Wisla Krakow would be postponed due to the frozen state of the pitch in Poland.

Unfortunately for Lazio, the game is to be rescheduled for the 5th March, a few days before the Rome derby. Lazio were originally due to play a Coppa Italia fixture (also a derby) that day, but the game was shifted to suit Italian TV stations.

24 February 2003
Lazio 0 - Atalanta 0

Yesterday Lazio played another frustrating home game and let the Serie A leaders slip further ahead. On the criticised pitch of the Stadio Olimpico, Atalanta defended in numbers for ninety minutes. Lazio put on a better show than their midweek UEFA Cup performance, with Stam and Giannichedda giving much-needed strength to the defence and midfield. But once again Lazio encountered enormous difficulty getting the ball into the net. Shooting wide, mistaking passes, and running into the wall of Atalanta defenders, Corradi, Lopez and Chiesa (a second-half substitute) failed to break the deadlock.

21 February 2003
Lazio 3 - Wisla Krakow 3 (UEFA CUP)

An embarrassing home match for Lazio. Earlier in the day, Roberto Mancini had blamed the terrible Stadio Olimpico pitch for some of his team's home failings, but last night the blame lay squarely on the players. Lazio's defence - minus Stam - seemed half-asleep and goalkeeper Marchegiani in the grip of a personality crisis, visibly coming apart at the seams.

The match started slowly, until a goal by new boy Lazetic took Lazio ahead. The Polish side, however, soon delighted their five thousand fans with an equaliser, before an own goal once more gave Lazio the advantage.

A dubious penalty awarded against a sliding Marchegiani gave Wisla their second equaliser. Then the reckless Marchegiani brought another player down on the edge of the area, and it was a second penalty, and a 3-2 scoreline for the visitors. Lazio battled back, bringing on Lopez to bolster the attack, and his pass gave Chiesa a ball perfectly designed to bring Lazio back on level terms. Chiesa didn't throw away the chance, and Lazio had managed a draw. Despite several more nasty moments as Marchegiani fumbled with the ball, the scoreline remained level. Lazio will face a difficult job in next week's return game in Poland.

16 February 2003
AC Milan 2 - Lazio 2

A heart-stopping match tonight, with end-to-end battles. Lazio played an outstanding first-half, dominating the San Siro pitch. After the ball was pushed away by Milan goalkeeper Dida, Stankovic reacted superbly to fit a smart shot under the crossbar. Lazio doubled their lead minutes later, when ex-Lazio captain Nesta appeared to push Corradi. Referee Collina awarded a penalty to the visitors, and Lopez scored to double Lazio's advantage.

For the second half, Ancelotti brought on Pippo Inzaghi, a change that altered the complexion of the match. It was Milan's turn to dominate, and Inzaghi hurdled Peruzzi to score for the home side, before making an excellent run to set up Rivaldo for the equalizer. Both teams continued to fight for victory, but the match finished as a draw.

Roberto Mancini expressed disappointment at fourth-placed Lazio's failure to come away with a victory, but observed 'We proved we are the equals of the clubs at the top'.

9 February 2003
Lazio 1 - Torino 1

Lazio's bad luck in their home matches continued this afternoon with a frustrating draw against struggling Torino. Diego Simeone gave Lazio the lead in the first half, and midway through the second half, Ferrante equalised for the visitors. Before, between and after these goals, Lazio dominated the game and attacked the Torino goal constantly but fruitlessly. The ball hit the crossbar, bounced off the line, shot just wide of the posts... Despite good performances by Lazio, most notably by the untiring Fiore and Stankovic, the team's best efforts just would not go in the net.

On a brighter note, today was the day that the more difficult sections of the Curva Nord decided to 'forgive' the hardworking Fabio Liverani. During half time, the crowd chanted for him to approach the Curva Nord, and the former Roma fan accepted the reconciliation, taking the hands of the Curva representatives who climbed onto the barrier to reach out to him. Again at the end of the game, Liverani ran over to the Curva to be saluted by the crowd and to throw them his shirt.

6 February 2003
Lazio 1 - Roma 2 (Coppa Italia, Semi-final first leg)

This derby match in the Coppa Italia was of more significance to a struggling Roma than to Lazio, still riding high in Serie A. But like all Roman derbies, the stadium was on fire and the game was hard-fought. Roma dominated for the first twenty minutes, Cassano slipping an easy goal past a befuddled Lazio. But once Lazio, the official home team, stirred themselves, the game changed direction, even if the scoreline didn't.

Enrico Chiesa played a good game, and it was his move that set up Fiore for Lazio's goal in the second half, after Roma had made it 2-0. His opening partner in attack, Simone Inzaghi had the misfortune to fracture a bone in his wrist - only just back from injury, the striker now looks set to be out for another two months. His place was taken by Bernardo Corradi, who was denied a penalty for Lazio when he was brought down in front of goal.

After striking the woodwork, sending countless chances just wide, and putting Roma's defence and 'keeper to the test, Lazio had to settle for a defeat. But the mood was upbeat: 'For 70 minutes only Lazio were playing,' said Mancini afterwards. 'Qualification is still open, and we will play for it in the second leg. We want to play in the final.'

2 February 2003
Chievo 1 - Lazio 1

Lazio suffered some bad luck in Verona this afternoon, hitting the woodwork several times, and paying for debatable refereeing decisisions - including the penalty awarded to Chievo at the end of the first half. The home side took the lead, and despite dominating most of the game, Lazio faced losing three crucial points. Then with just a minute to go before the final whistle, Simeone got his head to a Fiore cross, and Lazio equalised.

Next match is the home leg of the Coppa Italia derby with Roma - Wednesday at 8.45 Italian time.

Some lucky UK residents were able to watch Lazio play live this afternoon courtesy of British Eurosport; good news for exiled fans.

26 January 2003
Lazio 0 - Reggina 1

Lazio suffered their second defeat of the season today at the Stadio Olimpico and subside to fourth place in Serie A.

The new year has marked a decline in Lazio's performance, and today too many passes were misplaced, and too many chances wasted. The absence of Corradi (suspended) made a big difference to the home side's attacking potential, with Enrico Chiesa proving too fragile a replacement. The first half ended 0-0, and as the second half began a moment's inattention from Stam gave the ball to Bonazzoli. Reggina's new acquisition took advantage of the gift, and scored the only goal of the match.

Lazio's next fixture will be a game against the Lazio women's team (Italian champions) later this week at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome.

The big news from the Coppa Italia is that Lazio will be playing Roma in the two legs of the semi-final. Lazio-Roma takes place on February 5th at 8.45pm, and Roma-Lazio is set for March 5th (just a few days before the Serie A derby). Tickets for the Lazio home fixture should go on sale this week.

21 January 2003
Bari 0 - Lazio 0 (Coppa Italia quarter final - second leg)

Lazio fought a challenging match at Bari, and despite pressure from the home side, managed a goalless draw that sees Lazio qualify for the semi-final of the Coppa Italia. With the score in the Rome leg 2-1, Bari had the advantage of an away goal. Consequently they only needed one goal tonight to knock out Lazio - a fact that sent shivers down Lazio's back in the closing minutes, with Bari constantly on the attack.

Mancini said immediately afterwards that his team hadn't played well, but in fact their performance wasn't bad. Bari were formidable opponents, and although Lazio missed a few chances they played a dominant game and obtained a satisfactory result. In the semi-final, Lazio may face Roma - Mancini welcomed the possibility. 'A derby is always a good, prestigious game,' he told reporters. But with the UEFA Cup still a target, the next couple of months promise to be demanding ones for his players.

20 January 2003
Lazio 2 - Udinese 1

The Serie A season has reached the halfway point, and Lazio sealed their fairy tale by rising to second place. Milan are now top, with both Lazio and Inter just three points behind.

Both Lazio and Udinese played well in yesterday's clash in the sunshine of the Stadio Olimpico. Lazio sent their fans wild when a Lopez goal gave the side the lead. However Udinese battled bravely for 90 minutes, and Muzzi scored a good equaliser in the 41st minute. The deciding goal, though, came from the ex-Udinese player Stefano Fiore. In his 200th game in Serie A, Fiore slotted the ball in neatly just before the half-time whistle to score a goal he wouldn't celebrate, but which meant second place and a welcome home victory for Lazio. The visitors continued to threaten, but the exciting second half saw no change to the score.

15 January 2003
Lazio news 2003 so far

Football in Rome is back after a long Christmas break, and there's plenty of news to catch up on. Here are the biggest stories from the Lazio camp:

Lazio 2 - Bari 1 COPPA ITALIA

Tonight Lazio won a lucky victory against Bari in the first leg of their Coppa Italia quarter final. After taking the lead with a goal by hardworking Lucas Castroman, Lazio struggled to make headway, missing several chances in front of goal. Bari's equaliser gave them the boost of an away goal, but in the closing minutes luck was on Lazio's side; a Fiore corner was cleared badly and came off a Bari player to give Lazio the victory.

Brescia 0 - Lazio 0

Lazio failed to earn a place in the record books with an eighth consecutive away win at Brescia in the first Serie A match of 2003. Instead the game ended in a goalless draw which dims Lazio's title hopes slightly.

Lazio - Udinese Tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale now for Lazio's home match against Udinese on Sunday 19th January at 3pm. Prices range from €15-€99.

Cragnotti's departure

At the beginning of January, Lazio's president Sergio Cragnotti announced his resignation. The Cragnotti family have already left their posts at the club.

New president is lawyer Ugo Longo, who has indicated that he is standing in for a few months only, until the club is reorganised and permanent solutions found. He has been responsible for re-shaping the board of directors, bringing in Parma's director Luca Baraldi and also Lazio's manager Roberto Mancini.

Lazio's players have apparently now received part of the salary owing to them, and threatened legal action seems unlikely to go ahead.

23 December 2002
Lazio 1 - Bologna 1

The disappointment of a draw in the Stadio Olimpico moves Lazio back down to third place in Serie A.

Claudio Lopez scored to give Lazio the lead just before half time, but during the second half Lazio's celebrations were cut short when Zaccardo equalised for the visitors. Despite bringing on an extra striker, Lazio were hampered by difficult pitch conditions and had to content themselves with one point.

21 December 2002
COPPA ITALIA: Empoli 1 - Lazio 2

In Thursday's latest outing for Lazio's 'midweek' team, Mancini's squad sealed their place in the next round of the Coppa Italia. The Rome side's progress was already likely, after a 2-0 victory in the home leg at the Stadio Olimpico, but goals by Chiesa and Pancaro made success certain. Empoli snatched a late goal, but failed to challenge Lazio's remarkable away record.

15 December 2002
Juventus 1 - Lazio 2

A great triumph for Lazio, indisputably the better team tonight, who beat Juventus 2-1 in the Stadio delle Alpi in Turin. A neat goal angled in by Lazio ex Pavel Nedved put the home side ahead in the first half. But the Juventus fans only had sixty seconds to celebrate before a superb Stefano Fiore scored Lazio's equalizer. The Rome side continued to dominate, with Peruzzi remaining unemployed in goal. And at the beginning of the second half, the cohesion of a determined Lazio side paid off. Fiore hit a splendid volley into the net to give Lazio the lead. The team held onto their advantage until the final whistle, before celebrating with their fans.

Lazio remain in second place, one point behind leaders Milan, and continue to be the most praised and admired (albeit unpaid) team of the championship.

12 December 2002
Lazio 0 - Sturm Graz 1

Lazio lost tonight under heavy rain at the Stadio Olimpico, bringing an end to an unbeaten run that lasted for 18 matches. On a waterlogged pitch, Sturm Graz scored the winning goal in the game's closing minutes. Thanks to Lazio's 3 - 1 away win in Graz, however, the Rome side still qualify for the next round of the UEFA Cup.

After the match, manager Roberto Mancini emphasised 'We played a good game, but we could have done better. Now with a break in the UEFA Cup fixtures, we can concentrate on the championship'. On Sunday Lazio face leadership rivals Juve in what will be a difficult match, and an important one for the scudetto. In light of this, and the difficult playing conditions, Mancini didn't risk the crucial components of his number one side tonight. The team included Inzaghi, Chiesa (still not back to 100%), Liverani, Manfredini, Baggio, Concetti and the on-form Castroman.

8 December 2002
Lazio 3 - Inter 3

A great chance (and first place in Serie A) was thrown away at the Stadio Olimpico last night, as Lazio drew 3-all with Inter Milan, despite having taken a three-goal lead in the first half.

In an electric match, Claudio Lopez scored a penalty and went on to make it a hat-trick in the first half. Delirious Lazio fans thought it too good to be true; by the third goal their team had a comfortable advantage. Then a communal flurry of indecision in Lazio's penalty area culminated in an own-goal by the unfortunate Fernando Couto.

In a reverse of their recent form, Lazio played the second half with less conviction than the first. Not helped by some debatable refereeing decisions, the team struggled to keep control of the game. Inter played an organised and determined forty-five minutes, and were rewarded with two goals by Emre, giving them the draw which denies Lazio (after Milan's win) an extension to their tenure at top place.

4 December 2002
COPPA ITALIA - Lazio 2 - Empoli 0

Lazio's first Coppa Italia match (home leg) ended in success this afternoon in a nearly-empty Stadio Olimpico. Lazio, who haven't been beaten since the start of the season, are currently top of Serie A and on the pitch the fairy tale continues.

Today's team featured Liverani, Concetti, Manfredini, Baggio and other players who don't get many league outings, and Mancini demonstrated yet again the depth and quality of Lazio's squad. The first goal was by Pancaro, from a scuffle following a corner; the second a penalty by Simone Inzaghi. While the game was not particularly inspiring, it showed Lazio's determination to produce results, and also heralded the return from injury of Giuliano Giannichedda, which is good news in light of Saturday's big fixture, at home to Inter.

1 December
LAZIO IN TOP PLACE - Piacenza 2 - Lazio 3

This afternoon Lazio took top place in Serie A, beating Piacenza in dense fog to win an important three points. Lazio are clear on 27 points, thanks to draws by AC Milan and Juventus. For full standings click here.

The match in Piacenza started badly for Mancini's side, who played a poor first half-hour and found themselves losing 2-0. As during the Sturm Graz match, the team rallied in the face of adversity, and by half time Simeone and Lopez had made it 2-2. The second half was fought out until the closing minute, when a header from new hero Bernardo Corradi gave Lazio the victory.

28 November
Sturm Graz 1 - SS Lazio 3

Tonight Lazio took a big step towards qualification for the next round of the UEFA Cup. In the Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium, Roberto Mancini fielded Lazio's 'midweek' side, giving Chiesa, Inzaghi, Liverani and Dino Baggio places in his side. During the first half Lazio missed a painful number of chances, including several open-goal misses by Simone Inzaghi. The home side made Lazio pay for these errors, taking the lead just before half-time.

However, whatever the Lazio manager said to his players in the dressing room, it worked. As the second half began, Enrico Chiesa promptly slotted in a beautiful goal. Inzaghi compensated for his first-half errors by taking advantage of a Chiesa pass to give Lazio the lead. A fumble from the Sturm Graz goalie after a Lazio free-kick, an opportunistic strike, and Inzaghi doubled his tally, adding to Lazio's precious number of away goals.
